Belfast Area High School students in Chip Lagerbom's Archaeology class recently traveled to the University of Maine to visit the Hudson Museum and the archaeology laboratory in South Stevens Hall. In the lab they got to see and handle archaeological artifacts from a Revolutionary War trading post that was excavated by Mr. Lagerbom when he was in graduate school. Trade items recovered included ceramics, iron implements like knives and forks and axe heads, as well as glass trade beads, colonial wine bottles, gunflints and tailoring supplies.

The post was occupied from 1776 to 1779 and ended shortly after the British occupation of Castine. At the Hudson Museum, they learned of early Maine peoples including those from the Paleo, Archaic and Woodland eras and examined Wabanki customs and culture, including spending some time inside a Birchbark Wigwam.
