SEARSPORT — On Thursday, Feb. 29, Searsport District High School Theater premiers an original play: From Zero to Infinity: The Life of Dot, written by director Christi Goosman during the annual Waldo County Tour of One-Acts.

Shows open at Mt. View High School on Feb. 29, at 6:30 p.m., at Belfast Area High School on March 1 at 6:30 p.m., and then at Searsport on Saturday, March 2, at 6:30 p.m. The following Friday, March 8, SDHS will compete at Lawrence High School in Fairfield at the Regional Maine Drama Festival. Show begins there at 6 p.m. Tickets will only be sold via non-cash options.

The play shifts between Dot’s life and her dreams, as she tries to decide what direction she wants to take in her adult life. Should she pursue sports? Music? Math? She is visited in her dreams by great mathematicians of the past and present, depicted by shadow puppets.

Actors include Senior Lily Nadeau as Dot, Junior Aiden Boyd as Cole, Freshman Haylie Whitney as Alex/Mom, Freshman Keira Saball as Ezra, and Junior Bay Nadeau as Dad and Kel. Actors also are puppeteers for nearly 40 original laser-cut shadow puppets behind the screen – math greats like Ada Lovelace, Katherine Johnson, Pythagorus, Al-Khawarizmi, Isaac Newton, Benoit Mandelbrot, Hypatia, and more.

Lighting and sound design is by Senior Ian Cottrell, Technical direction is by Aaron Kircheis.

“Many years, and many hands and minds have made this show possible, from the calculus class alumni who did the research on zero and infinity, the theater alumni who brainstormed the characters and parts of the story, the current theater students who are designing and constructing the puppets, the grant writers Mr. Peckenham and Ms. Capwell for securing some funding to merge art and STEM, the Maine STEM Collaborative and the Maine Space Grant Consortium for funding and encouragement of this creative project,” said Goosman, in a news release. “SDHS Theater truly is taking this show from zero to infinity!”
