Met Opera’s Madama Butterfly broadcasts in simulcast at Strand Theatre, May 11

    ROCKLAND — Puccini’s Madama Butterfly will be presented as a Metropolitan Opera Live-In-HD simulcast from New York City at the Strand Theatre on Saturday, May 11, at 1 p.m. An encore will be screened on Tuesday, May 21, at 1 p.m.

    In her Met debut, Asmik Grigorian tackles the demanding role of Cio-Cio-San, the trusting geisha at the heart of Puccini’s tragedy. Tenor Jonathan Tetelman is the callous American naval officer Pinkerton whose betrayal destroys her. Mezzo-soprano Elizabeth DeShong is the steadfast maid Suzuki, and baritone Lucas Meachem is the American consul Sharpless. Acclaimed maestro Xian Zhang makes her Met debut conducting Anthony Minghella’s vivid production. This opera is sung in Italian, with English subtitles.

    The Met’s award-winning Live in HD series has increased accessibility to Met performances for audiences around the world. Met artists serve as hosts for the Live in HD series, providing background on the operas, introducing exciting behind-the-scenes features, and conducting live interviews with stars, crew, and production teams.

    The Strand Theatre’s 2023-24 Live In HD season is generously supported by Camden Law.                                                               

    Running time is 3 hours 15 min, including one intermission.

    Ticket prices for the live broadcast are $30/Adults, $25/Strand Members, and $15/Students, including college students with ID.
