Merryspring online talk to hear The Health Benefits of Edible Berries

    Dorothy Klimis-Zacas will lead an online presentation called The Health Benefits of Edible Berries, hosted by Merryspring Nature Center on Tuesday, March 12, at 12 p.m. 

    Recently, much scientific progress has been made on the health benefits of foods high in antioxidants. Blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, and other berries are high in polyphenols and their health benefits in preventing and/or arresting chronic diseases have been documented during the last decade. This presentation will focus on the health benefits of berries on Cardiovascular Disease, Metabolic Syndrome, including Obesity-induced inflammation and Hypertension.  

    Klimis-Zacas is professor of Clinical Nutrition at the University of Maine teaching graduate and undergraduate courses at the Food Science and Human Nutrition Program. She is cooperating professor of the School of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Maine, at the Department of Human Nutrition at the University of Milan, Italy, and at Harokopio University of Nutrition and Dietetics, Athens, Greece. She has been researching the role of trace minerals on vascular function and lipid metabolism, and the role of wild blueberry enriched diets and also bioactive compounds in wild blueberries on cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, obesity-induced inflammation, wound healing and skin regeneration. 

    A Fulbright Fellow, she has had senior Fulbright Fellowships and Fulbright Specialist awards to Italy and Greece and she is a Founding Board member of the Maine Fulbright Chapter. The author of over 130 research articles and edited books, she serves on many editorial boards and is a member of many professional societies.
