Blue Café and Jazz in June

Jazz returns to Camden Opera House March 1

CAMDEN — Friday, March 1 will be a celebration of jazz at the Camden Opera House.

The Blue Café will host Vicki Burns and David Clarke that night. The Blue Café is an occasional series in the intimate third-floor listening room of the opera house, 29 Elm St. The performance space seats around 50, and the adjacent lounge offers a relaxing place to meet with friends before the show. Doors open at 7 p.m. in the elevator lobby; attendees take the elevator to the third floor.

“Jazz singer Vicki Burns is the complete package: with her three-octave range, sure sense of rhythm, and perfect intonation, she can scat convincingly, swing like a horn, and write hip songs worthy of attention from other vocalists,” said COH, in a news release.

Burns grew up in Maine, established her career in the San Francisco Bay area, and now is based in New York City.

Joining her in the Blue Café is Belfast’s David Clarke, the go-to jazzman for many a combo and a member of Maine’s The Nite Show Band.

Blue Café admission is free, thanks to the opera house’s Community Arts Fund, and donations are welcome.

Tickets for this summer’s Jazz in June festival go on sale that day,

Jazz in June is a two-day in-town festival that may yet add a day this year. Friday and Saturday, June 14 and 15, there will be free community concerts at lunchtime, cocktail hour sets at downtown clubs, and featured concerts by international stars in the evening at the Camden Opera House stage.

The Friday night concert features France’s Django Festival Allstars, with an opening set by Midcoast native Myles Kelley and his combo.

The Saturday night show features pianist and vocalist Kandace Spring with her all-female rhythm section.

Fingerstyle guitarist Hiroya Tsukamoto will open that evening.

Tickets for both concerts go on sale March 1 at camdenoperahouse.com. For more information about the festival, visit jazzinjunecamdenme.com.
