TROY — James (Jim) Joseph Fernald of Troy, Maine, passed away peacefully with family by his side on February 29, 2024.

Born on March 19, 1934, Jim was raised in Troy and graduated from Freedom Academy in 1952. During his younger years, he worked at Palmer Construction in Hampden and at Penobscot Poultry Hatchery in Unity. In 1968, Jim and his family moved to the Fernald farm on Bagley Hill Road in Troy. In 1974, Jim took over the farm and ran the farm for 25 years until his retirement in 2001. During Jim’s tenure, the farm grew from 15 milking cows in 1974 to a herd of 60 in 1993.

Jim was a hard worker who spent most of his time in the great outdoors. He enjoyed fishing, trapping, and hunting for the biggest buck. He loved gardening and strived to grow the tallest tomato plants and largest pumpkins. Neighbors looked forward to his vegetable stand each season.

Jim is survived by his devoted wife of 68 years, Sally (Wren) Fernald of Troy; his brother Stephen and favorite sister-in-law Barrie (Lowe) Fernald of Troy; sisters-in law Alice (Myrick) Wren of Thorndike and Barbara (Wren) Ellis of Belfast; and several nieces and nephews. He was especially close to his special nephew, Mark Wren, and dear friend Russell Mitchell.

Jim was predeceased by his son Maverick J. Fernald, his daughter Sandra Y. Fernald, and his sister Kay F. Tozier.

Jim will be remembered for his knowledge of wildlife and his story-telling ability. His affection for his Brittany dogs, Tiffney and Abby, was well known. They never missed a chance to ride with Jim across the fields on his four-wheeler. If you spot a wild turkey or a deer in your travels, be reminded of Jim.

A graveside service will be held at a future date. Donations in Jim’s memory can be sent to the Troy Ladies Auxiliary, c/o the Town of Troy, 129 Rogers Road, Troy, Maine 04987.
