(Update: Feb. 26, 2024)  Though a small kitchen fire in South Thomaston, Sunday, Feb. 25, was extinguished relatively quickly, the responding fire departments still used approximately 250 gallons of water from within their tanker trucks, according to Fire Chief David Elwell.

Occupants within the mobile home at 11 Scott’s Terrace reported to firefighters that they were not in the kitchen until the burn had grown significant enough to be noticed.

Smoke and flames originated in an area of the kitchen near the refrigerator. A more specific location of origin for the fire has not been determined at this time, however, a couple of small appliances – a toaster and a portable ice maker -- happened to be on the counter next to the fridge. Firefighters have considered one of those appliances as a possible cause.

Half of the home suffered significant damage as a result of the fire. The fire department offered Red Cross assistance, but the family declined.
