Decolonizing Settler Maps of Maine at Rockport library

Event has passed

ROCKPORT — On Wednesday, March 6, at 6 p.m., the Rockport Public Library will host a presentation by staff from the Maine Maritime Museum exploring Wabanaki history and colonial history through map bias and perspective.

Maps record information about the world: locations of towns, geographic features, or points of interest. When viewed through a historical lens, maps also record how perceptions of a place can change over time or challenge assumptions, past and present. All maps have a story to tell.

In this program, participants will examine 18th - 19th century maps and primary sources to think critically about how a place and its history is recorded, remembered, or erased.

Maine Maritime Museum connects people to the past, present, and future of Maine’s waterways, and their global reach. On their campus in Bath, Maine visitors can experience rotating and immersive exhibits, guided tours, and an extensive watercraft collection all located on the grounds of a historic shipyard.
