travelling the globe and perfecting the ability to tell a good tale

The Sail, Power, and Steam Museum’s Monday, March 11 online speaker series, Captains’ Quarters, will feature stories of the explorations and adventures of R.J. (Bob) and Mary Rubadeau. The talk will be held at 6:30 p.m., via Zoom. Attendance is free, but registration is required. To register, visit the “Music and Calendar” tab at www.sailpowersteammuseum.org.

With travel adventures that have spanned the globe during their time together, the Rubadeaus have honed the skill of telling a good tale – whether it is a story of jumping out of a plane on their first date or traveling to Cape Horn.

“Their talk will highlight the experiences that have inspired their writings, performances, and productions and explore the joys of turning ‘sea stories’ into prose – all with their wonderful senses of humor, humility, and openness,” said the Museum, in a news release.

Experienced sailors and storytellers, their summertime “home base” extends along the coast of Maine and beyond aboard Dog Star, the family’s 93-year-old Phil Rhodes designed ketch.

Bob is an award-winning author, columnist, novelist, journalist, and poet. He has written about his career and adventures as a professional blue-water sailor in leading sailing periodicals and two award-winning books, Bound for Roque Island: Sailing Maine and the World and Bound for Cape Horn: Skills for Expedition Cruising.

Mary’s 40-year career as a teacher and administrator has been dedicated to raising the bar for public education. She was Colorado’s 2008 Superintendent of the Year and now chairs the board of trustees at Fort Lewis College. Her first ocean passage was in 1973 aboard Maxi Ondine.

Join the museum at 6:30 p.m., on March 11, as they chat with and hear stories “from the cockpit” by Bob and Mary Rubadeau, with an introduction by Capt. Jim Sharp, co-founder of the Sail, Power, and Steam Museum.

In the true spirit of our maritime heritage, it is suggested that everyone grab a warm beverage, settle into the comfort of their own boat or home, and fire up the woodstove during our chilly winter evenings to join us for a fascinating evening talking about weather.
