ST. GEORGE — St. George School is presenting a one-night only show at the Odd Fellows Hall at 7 Elementary School Road, April 10, at 6 p.m.

The play, Choose Your Own Adventure, was written by St. George seventh grader Violet Bedell and is directed by Lyanna Henderson. It features a cast of St. George middle school students.

This will be the first play staged that Bedell has written. Is she apprehensive about a big audience seeing her words translated her peers acting it out?

“When I was a lot younger I had such a fear of stage fright,” said Bedell. “I was scared of being embarrassed, or judged and everyone has that fear, especially when you are 12 years old.”

She said that just this year she read an essay in front of 300 people at a community meeting.

“Last year, I acted in the play and this year I have a role in my own play,” said Bedell. “So I’ve gotten a lot more comfortable with people seeing what I do and say because it’s what I really love.”

Bedell said the play includes having a narrator on stage. It is about two characters who are called onto the stage by the narrator and sent on various adventures.

“They go to a haunted house, and through a TV show about a love story, and a café.” said Bedell. “There are 11 scenes and one of them is a middle school talent show. There a lot of fun characters, around 15 to 20.”

Bedell is proud that her play includes her own perspective as a student, and she is able to personalize the characters.

“The hardest thing was that I knew it had to be fun, this being a sixth- through eighth grade play,” she said. “There needed to be a lot of characters and be enjoyable for kids and adults. There were costumes and characters to think about while I was writing so it was me stepping out of my comfort zone to get it done.”

Bedell worked at creating depth to the plot, adding insight and word play.

She chose a plot, and then began slowly working all the details out in her head. Would people like it? Would it be better than last year’s play?

“They gave me four months to write it,” she said.” Once I started writing it came quickly. I was worried,of course, about how people would react to it and I spent a lot of time working it out in my head, but once I had it written I was really proud of it.”

Bedell said she loves writing stories and now plays. She has been with most of her peers with for a very long time and they are more like family to her. In addition to her writing, she plays softball, clarinet and bass clarinet in the band.

She loves reading and baking. All the things that make her a normal seventh grader, but with exceptional talent.
