The U.S. News and World Report rankings for high schools was released April 30 and six local schools earned top 75 rankings within the state.

Each of the local schools earning statewide rankings also received rankings at the national level. Nationally, 17,245 schools were ranked, including 88 schools in Maine.

This year, U.S. News & World Report looked at data on more than 23,000 public high schools in all 50 states and the District of Columbia before ranking more than 17,000 schools based on six factors. Only schools with a senior class enrollment of 15 students or greater were analyzed.

The six factors, and the percentage of how much those factors weigh into the rankings, includes college readiness (30%), math and reading proficiency (20%), math and reading performance (20%), underserved student performance (10%), college curriculum breadth (10%) and graduation rate (10%).

“After the six indicators that had been standardized were weighted, those weighed scores were summed and then transformed so that each eligible school receives an overall percentile score between zero and 100 at two decimal places, with the top performer scoring 100,” U.S. News said about the rankings. “The overall score is calculated as a percentile score that indicates what percentile position a school is in out of the 17,245 ranked schools. For example, a school with a score of 90 means that 10% of the high schools are ranked higher and 90% of the schools are ranked lower.”

Below is how each local school was ranked in the state and in the nation. Also included is the school’s overall score on the U.S. News scorecard used for the rankings.
