Oceanside softball blanks MCI in prelim showdown

ROCKLAND — In a Class B North preliminary round game, the fifth-seeded Oceanside varsity softball team hosted and bested 12th-seeded Maine Central Institute. 

The game, played in Rockland, ended with a score of 11-0 in favor of the hosts. 

With the win, the Mariners advance to the regional quarterfinals for a road showdown with fourth-seeded Medomak Valley on Thursday, June 6 at 3 p.m.

The two teams have meet twice on the diamond this season with Oceanside winning the first game 7-4 in Waldoboro and Medomak Valley winning the most recent meeting, on May 29 in Rockland, 5-0. 

In the Tuesday contest, Oceanside collected three runs in each of the first two innings and five runs in the sixth frame. 

The visiting Huskies recorded two hits and committed six errors, while the host Mariners tallied eight hits and committed two errors. 

Working the pitcher’s circle for Maine Central Institute was Emily Linkletter, who fanned two batters and walked eight in six innings. 

Chloe Jones pitched for Oceanside, recording 10 strikeouts and one walk in seven innings. 

At the plate for the visitors were Hannah Peacock (single) and Linkletter (single). 

Pacing the offense for the hosts were Jones (double, single, RBI), Abby Veilleux (two singles, stolen base), Adrianna Whitemore (single, two RBIs), Kalli Grover (single), Jessica Watkinson (single) and Rachel Joyce (single). 

“Chloe Jones was solid on the mound and the defense and hitting came through when needed,” said Oceanside head coach Rusty Worcester.
