Hermon softball tops Oceanside

HERMON — The Oceanside varsity softball team hit the road Thursday, May 9 for a showdown with Hermon. 

In the end, the visiting Mariners were bested 5-2. 

With the loss, Oceanside dropped its record to 8-2 on the season. 

Oceanside will hit the road for its next contest Wednesday, May 15 against Nokomis. 

Hermon plated a run in the first inning and a pair in each in the fourth and sixth innings. 

Oceanside tallied a run in each the first and seventh frames. 

Hermon collected five hits and committed four errors. 

Oceanside tallied four hits and recorded two errors. 

Chloe Jones fanned 16 batters in the pitcher’s circle for Oceanside and allowed only one walk. 

In the pitcher’s circle for the hosts, Bre Oakes fanned 11 and walked two. 

At the plate for Oceanside were Abby Veilleux (single, two stolen bases), Adrianna Whitamore (double), Lily Judeki (single) and Raechel Joyce (single). 

At the plate for Hermon were Oakes (home run), Faith Coombs (single, stolen base), Megan Chamberlain (single, double, RBI) and Raechel Balmas (single). 

“Oceanside played a great game offensively,” said Oceanside assistant coach Rachel Burns. “The girls hit the ball hard and we had some close calls but Hermon's defense was able to stop us. We hit a few line drives but right to Hermon's defense.”
