The Camden Hills Regional High School Music Department traveled to New York City last weekend to attend the WorldStrides music festival, which is held at Riverside Church in the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

The festival is a renowned event that attracts music students from all over the country, and the Camden Hills music ensembles more than held their own, said Director Drew Albert, in a news release.

”All of the ensembles earned Gold Ratings, which is no small feat,” he said. “This means that the average score from the three adjudicators was at least 90 out of 100. Jazz Band and Chamber Singers received Adjudicator Awards, which is even more impressive. This award is given to ensembles that score an average of 95 or higher.”

Another festival highlight was the news that Chorale received a Festival of Gold invitation to perform next year at Carnegie Hall. This invitation is a major achievement for any music department and is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the vocal students at Camden Hills, said Albert.

Jazz combo drummer Monty Rugg was bestowed with the esteemed Maestro Award, a recognition reserved for a select few musicians who demonstrate exceptional talent and musicianship.

“This achievement was a moment of immense pride for our entire school community and a testament to the tremendous talent in the Camden Hills Music Department,” said Albert.

”Aside from the festival, our students and chaperones had a blast exploring the vibrant city of New York,” he said. “They savored the flavors of the Chelsea Market, marveled at the unique 'Little Island,' and strolled along the Highline. The bright lights of Broadway beckoned, with shows like Sweeney Todd, Spamalot, and the Blue Man Group leaving a lasting impression. And for a taste of the city's renowned jazz scene, they visited Birdland, a venue world-famous among jazz lovers.”

The trip to the WorldStrides music festival was a resounding success for the Camden Hills Regional High School music department.

“The performances were outstanding, and the recognition they received was well-deserved,” the release said.

The Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Combo, and Concert Band are directed by CHRHS faculty Craig Ouellette. Chorale and Chamber Singers are directed by CHRHS faculty Drew Albert.
