This Week in Lincolnville: Hunting season, and election day at last

A Bit More Lincolnville News

If you have a hunter in your household, you don’t need to be told that deer hunting season begins tomorrow, Nov. 1 at sunrise. This first day is for Maine residents only.  Starting Monday out-of-state hunters with a Maine license will be able to hunt as well. The season lasts until November 29, every day, sunrise to sunset, except for Sundays when hunting is illegal. Hunting regulations can be found here

Hunters are required to wear blaze orange clothing while in the woods, but savvy hikers, bikers, and walkers wear it as well during November. Even dogs and horses often sport an orange kerchief. None of this is necessary information for long-time residents, but it is for those who are new to the area.

Tomorrow morning, Saturday, King David’s Masonic Lodge puts on its annual Hunters’ Breakfast at Lincolnville Center School starting at 6 a.m. Enter through the door near the gym. You certainly don’t have to be a hunter to enjoy this breakfast, which includs all the fixings. Hope to see you there!

We’ll all be glad to see Tuesday, November 4 – Election Day – come, the day when we can finally put an end to these long, contentious campaigns, along with the mailings, phone calls at all hours, and endless television commercials. The polls are open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the gym at LCS, 523 Hope road. If you’re not registered to vote, you can do so that day at the polls.

In addition to the United Christian Church’s popular bake table, voters will have a chance to sign two petitions, both aimed at cutting down on the enormous sums of money that pour into the state at election time. One would strengthen the Maine Clean Election law. The other petition, We the People Initiative seeks a constitutional amendment that establishes that corporations are not people and money is not speech.  If the funding of candidates and election issues troubles you, (and money in politics is an equal opportunity problem: whether you’re an R, a D or unenrolled) consider signing one or both of these petitions.
