BELFAST — A Swanville woman is in stable condition after sustaining a serious head injury during a motorcycle accident June 22.

Katie Hills, 30, was riding north on Swan Lake Avenue shortly after 1 p.m. when a vehicle pulled out ahead of her from Mill Lane, according to Belfast Police Sergeant John Gibbs.

After attempting to brake for the vehicle, Hills lost control of her motorcycle.

“She went into a rear skid and flipped the bike sideways,” Gibbs said.

Hills, who was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, sustained a serious head injury and was transported to Waldo County General Hospital via ambulance.

Though taken to the hospital, Hills never actually entered the building, instead being transported from the ambulance directly onto a LifeFlight of Maine helicopter.

After being flown to Eastern Maine Medical Center Hills, she underwent emergency surgery to address her injuries.

Hills, who remains hospitalized, has been upgraded to stable condition.

Members of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene, and worked to digitally reconstruct the accident. Gibbs said it remains unclear how close together the vehicles were.

Speed does not appear to have been a factor in the accident.
