Oceanside wins slugfest with visiting Belfast

Fri, 05/22/2015 - 10:15pm

THOMASTON – The Oceanside softball team picked up another win Friday to start the Memorial Day Weekend off with a 17-10 win over the Lions of Belfast.

This was a slugfest as the fastball pitchers tried to throw as hard as they could in the very wet, rainy weather in this game. The result was 27 runs, 23 hits and 16 walks for the two teams combined.

Oceanside moves to 9-3 and is currently in fifth place in the Eastern Class B Heal Point standings. The Mariners have four regular season games left and with the four teams this will be the second time around for each with Oceanside at 2-2 so far this season. They play Lincoln Academy next Tuesday, May 26 and Morse on Wednesday, May 27. Both teams defeated the Mariners in the first encounter.

On Friday at home the Mariners scored 11 runs in the first inning, one in the second and third, and four in the fifth. Belfast plated three in the second inning, four in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth.

The Marines opened up with some timely hitting and some walks issued due in part to the sometimes heavy rain to start the game. Belfast however was not going home without a fight and while they clawed back a little at a time they could not stop the runs from scoring for the Mariners.

Paige Tyler (7-2) got the start and the win for the Mariners pitching three innings allowing seven runs with eight walks while striking out five. Kristina Ferguson pitched four innings of relief for the save allowing three runs on one walk with one strike out. Tyler and Ferguson combined allowed 12 hits.

Mariah Sturgis took the circle for the Lions pitching six innings allowing 17 runs on 12 hits and seven walks with three hit batters. She struck out seven.

“Tough game today with the weather, but we came through with the victory.” said Oceanside coach Rusty Worcester.

Hitting for Oceanside were, Brianna Dugan (3 singles), Ari Curtis (2 doubles, 2 RBIs), Casey Pine (2 doubles, 2-RBIs), Lauren Miller (double, single) and Madelyn Young (double, single, 3-RBIs).

For Belfast, Olivia Lovejoy (3 singles), Sturgis (2 singles), Breann Cummings (double, single, RBI), Anna Simmons (2 singles), Cassandra Thayer (single) and Kelci Faulkingham (2 singles).
