Oceanside baseball, softball rack up runs in Saturday contests

SOUTH CHINA — The Oceanside varsity baseball and softball teams hit the road to South China for Saturday morning contests on May 12.

In the Saturday contests, the Mariners racked up a combined 35 runs as the baseball team plated 11 runs, while softball plated 24. 

In baseball, Oceanside improved to 8-2 on the season with the win, while Erskine fell to 4-6. 

In softball, Oceanside improved to 8-2 on the year with the victory, while Erskine fell to 2-8. 

Baseball: Oceanside 11, Erskine Academy 4

Oceanside plated four runs in the first inning, six in the third and one in the fourth, while collecting 14 hits. 

Erskine Academy plated a run in each the first and fifth and two in the seventh, while collecting 14 hits and committing an error. 

At the plate for Oceanside were Uriah Thongsophaphone (double, three singles, run, and RBI), Titus Kaewthong (two doubles, single, two runs and RBI), Logan Sheridan (double), Matt Waldron (double), Michael Dougherty (two singles) and Michael Norton Jr (single and double). 

At the plate for Erskine were Nick Barber (double and three singles, RBI) and Boomer Jorgensen (three singles, run, RBI). 

Softball: Oceanside 24, Erskine Academy 1

Oceanside plated three runs in the first inning, four in the second, two in the fourth, three in the fifth and 12 in the sixth. Oceanside collected 25 hits and committed one error. 

Erskine plated its lone run in the fifth, while collecting five hits and committing two errors. 

In the pitcher’s circle for Oceanside was Abby Veilleux, who fanned three and walked one in the six innings. 

In the pitcher’s circle for Erskine were Kaylynn Hodgkins (four innings, one strikeout and two walks) and Ciarra Mahoney (two innings, one strikeout, three walks). 

Leading the way for Erskine at the plate was Olivia Wyman, who collected a single and a RBI. 

At the plate for Oceanside were Kalli Grover (three doubles, single, five RBIs), Rachel Joyce (triple, three singles, four RBIs), Veilleux (four singles, two RBIs), Chloe Jones (triple, single, three RBIs), Casey Pine (three singles, RBI), Adrianna Whitamore (double, two singles, two RBIs) and Hannah Robinson (two singles). 

After the game, Oceanside head coach Rusty Worcester noted the 25 hits “might be the most hits by one of my teams in all the years I have coached” with 11 of those 25 coming in the sixth inning alone. 

“We wanted to bounce back strong after a tough loss to Hermon and we did just that,” Worcester said.
