CAMDEM: On Wednesday, Aug 27, and Thursday, Aug. 28, at 7:30 p.m., Leap Dance Theater will present, “Sky Hunter,” an inspiring performance featuring the poetry of the great Sufi mystic Rumi. The performance takes place at the Red Door Barn, 46 John Street in Camden.

The show expresses original music and choreography and features dancers Kristi Williamson, Shana Bloomstein and Kari Luehman, along with musicians Jeff Densmore, Max McFarland and Andre Lascoutx. Featured singers are Amy Green and Christine de Michele. The show combines the elements of world, modern and improvisational dance with inspirational, live music and projected images to bring poetry and dance to life.

Costumes were designed by artist/quilter Carrie Hedstrom.

Rumi is considered to be one of the greatest Persian poets of known history. He lived in during the 13th Century and his works are said to transcend both national and ethnic borders.

It has been said that Rumi was able to verbalize the personal and confusing world of human growth and development in a clear and direct fashion. American performance poet and author Shahram Shiva who began translating Rumi’s poetry as a teen in 1988 said,” he does not offend anyone and he includes everyone.”

“Today, Rumi’s poems can be heard in churches, synagogues, Zen monasteries and in the downtown New York art and performance music scene,” he said, in a published article.

The music and dance that evolved out of Rumi’s poetry came to be known as the Whirling Dervish.

Following its preview performances on Wednesday and Thursday, Sky Hunter will travel to the Kripalu Center for yoga in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, as a featured performance over the Labor Day weekend in a course called “The Mystery of the Soul.” It will be featured along with national best-selling authors Thomas Moore and Sera Beak.

Seating is limited for the two shows and reservations can be made by calling 207 975-5567. Parking is provided at the Legion Hall onPearl Street. Tickets are $12.
