ROCKLAND — Some lucky family is going to have a nice house on Brewster Street in Rockland in the near future. Today was the first day on the job site, and along with Peter Fagonde, the newly hired construction supervisor for Midcoast Habitat for Humanity, came a little help from volunteers who are employed at the McDonald’s restaurants in Rockland and Thomaston.

Nearly 20 employees total gave up a day of earning wages to volunteer their time to give back to the community.

“We believe in supporting the community that supports us,” said McDonald’s General Manager Stacy Harris, of the Thomaston location. “It’s really, really important. I mean how great is it that you help give someone a home. And on a personal level, it is very fulfilling.”

When asked how the employees felt about what they were doing, the group response was a resounding, “Really good, we love it”.

According to Fagonde the house is rehab that was purchased by Midcoast Habitat and completed will get another family into their very own home.

"We purchased the house and two lots as a package deal," said Midcoast Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Tia Anderson. The incomplete rehab was purchased from a private owner, which was an opportunity Midcoast Habitat couldn't pass. With the land it was something that appealed to use as a package, we will allow us to complete the rehab for a larger family and build two future homes on the adjacent lots."

Anderson said they are considering it a three-part project, called the Brewster Street Project.

“It’s one street over from Pine Street, where we completed a house last winter. And it’s part of a neighborhood revitalization we have started there,” said Anderson.

Midcoast Habitat for Humanity is in the selection process for the first family now, she said.
