Friendship outbuilding fire deemed arson

FRIENDSHIP — A fully involved fire of an outbuilding at a trailer home on Timber Point Road in Friendship Saturday night has been deemed arson, according to Fire Chief Kevin Benner.

The Friendship Fire Department was called in around 9:15 p.m., and fire departments from the towns of Cushing and Waldoboro also responded as mutual aid.

Timber Point Road is located off Waldoboro Road (Route 220), just south of Friendship Scoop and Barrett Road.

Benner said contents of the shed included a lot of tools, and that explosions heard at the scene likely came from a "few gunshot shells."

"We had the fire knocked down in about 10 minutes, and then we stayed on scene a couple of hours pawing it over and putting out hotspots," said Benner.

He said about 25 firefighters responded to the scene, and that there was no damage to the trailer, which was located close to the burning shed.

Benner said the State Fire Marshal's Office was called to investigate, adding that there was no power to the outbuilding.

"The cause of the fire was arson, according to the Fire Marshal's Office," said Benner. "As for the exact cause and other details, they are the ones handling that information."

The Fire Marshal's Office is closed Monday, due to it being a state holiday.
