Camden — Frank Callanan, 60, passed in the early morning hours of March 7, 2015, peacefully at home in Camden, from complications of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

An avid skier, kayaker, sailor, traveler, gardener and outdoorsman, Frank served many years on the Board of Directors of the Merryspring Foundation in Camden, where, in lieu of flowers, donations in his memory would be most appreciated. His family also extends thanks to the Kno-Wal-Lin Hospice Service and the staff of the Waldo County General Hospital.

Francis Xavier Callanan was born Nov. 8, 1954, to James and Ursula Morrison Callanan, who predeceased him. He was the third of seven children and grew up in the tight-knit Irish-American community of Brighton, Mass., where he attended the local parish school before moving to the Xaverian Brothers High School, where he was captain of the swim team. A standout student, he attended the University of Madrid, Spain, and Colby College, from which he graduated in 1976.

Frank worked as an educator for many years, teaching Spanish, French, math, science and computer science, initially in Massachusetts and then in the St. George and Camden schools, where he served as the director of information technology. He founded his own business, Data Pro North East, an independent software design company, in 2003, which he ran successfully until a few months before his passing.

He leaves his wife of 30 years, Susan Morrissey of Camden; his sons and their wives, Nick Callanan and Louisa Donelson of Portland, and Zeke and Chelsea Callanan of Portland; his stepchildren, Tyler Collins and his partner, Katrina Campbell, of Warren, and Eliza Collins-Leavitt and Josh Leavitt of Rockport; his beloved grandchildren, Ezra and Cora Leavitt of Rockport; his mother-in-law, Mary Morrissey of North Brookfield, Mass., and the mother of his sons, Lori Safford of Carrabassett. Also, his Callanan siblings and their spouses, Jim and Grace of Medfield, Mass., Dennis and Bernice of Woburn, Mass., Joseph of Everett, Mass., Lawrence of Natick, Mass., David and Barbara of Natick, Mass., and Mary Callanan and Larry Finlayson of Weymouth, Mass. and New York City; eleven nieces and nephews; a legion of Callanan, Hewitt and Morrison cousins, and close friends too numerous to name here.

A memorial service in Frank's honor will be held Saturday, June 6, at noon at Merryspring Nature Center and Arboretum on Conway Road in Camden. All are welcome.

To one and all, in Frank's ecumenical spirit, PEACE.
