BRUNSWICK — It took 97 minutes for a goal to be tallied Saturday, Nov. 2 in Brunswick as the third-seeded Camden Hills varsity boys soccer team challenged second-seeded Brunswick on the road in a Class A North regional semifinal thriller. 

In double overtime, after 97 minutes of scoreless play, Brunswick’s Josh Musica found the back of the net with a header off a cross to push the host Dragons into the Class A North regional finals with a 1-0 victory. 

“We had some good luck and some bad luck today,” said Camden Hills head coach Ryan Hurley. “It was a pretty even game with several momentum swings. We had some good luck in that Brunswick hit the post several times and the ball deflected out of bounds and some bad luck in that we were pretty sure we scored a goal in the second half that wasn't acknowledged by the officials.” 

Brunswick held advantages in corners (6-4) and shots (24-14). 

Camden Hills had 23 fouls, while Brunswick had 12. 

In the goalie net for the visiting Windjammers, Casey Messer recorded eight saves. Jack McDiarmid, meanwhile, recorded four saves for the hosts. 

“Overall, our community should be really proud of the way our players represented our community, they worked exceptionally hard and had chances to win the game but we didn't get the final play we needed to do so and Brunswick did,” said Hurley. “I'm proud of the season we put out there and thankful for all the support our community gave the boys all season along and especially today.”

Hurley noted the Windjammers had what he called a really special group of seniors this season including Quinn Brown, Gus Vietze, Adam Thorndike, Taylor Wesbrock, Joby Byrd, Gage Whalen, Ben Owre, Hugh Costigan, Max Moore and Colby Strout.

“I'm so thankful to have had the chance to watch these guys grow into really special young men and to watch them re-establish what Windjammer soccer is all about,” said Hurley.

Hurley also praised the leadership of captains Moore, Brown, Owre and Costigan. 

“A year ago we were 7-7 and these guys worked their tails off and brought us back to where we belong (11-5), in the upper echelon of soccer in Maine,” said Hurley.
