ROCKPORT — The Camden Hills ice hockey team took the ice at the Midcoast Recreation Center on Friday, Nov. 30 for a preseason contest against Cony.

The Class B Windjammers entered the contest against the Class A Rams under the direction of their new head coach John Magri, who took over the program after Karl Enroth guided the Windjammers for a decade.

In the Friday showdown, the Windjammers collected an 11-3 victory over the Rams, though as a preseason scrimmage the contest does not count towards either team’s overall records.

In the opening period, Camden Hills chalked up five goals with the first three coming from Bryce Tyler (unassisted, Nicholas Tausek assist on power play, Levi Guay assist) and the final two coming from Dylan Hastings (Tyler assist) and Ben Wells (Eliza Roy assist). Cony’s Tyrel Souza tallied a goal off a Reed Hopkins assist.

Cony had two minor penalties in the opening period, while the Windjammers had four.

In the second period, Tyler scored a pair of unassisted goals, with one on a power play, for the Windjammers. Gabe Godbout scored a pair of Cony goals off assists from Hopkins and Souza.

The second period saw Cony collect four minor penalties for roughing, a major penalty for contact to the head and two major penalties for fighting. The Windjammers had a minor penalty for holding, a minor penalty for elbowing, two minor penalties for roughing and two major penalties for fighting.

Two players from each team were ejected from the contest for fighting.

In a shortened third period, Camden Hills collected four goals in four minutes courtesy Guay (unassisted), Tyler (unassisted), Roy (Hayden Thibeault and Wells assist) and Tausek (Rory Carlson assist).

With eight minutes on the clock in the third period, a Camden Hills penalty pending and two Cony penalties pending, Cony’s head coach elected to remove his team from the ice and end the contest early. Those penalties were not recorded on the official stat sheet.

“Camden Hills came out of the gate elevated to confront Class A level competition and did not confront any resistance from the Cony squad,” said Magri. “We proceeded to utilize all of our young players and Cony scored with a minute to go in the period. I was pleased with our penalty kill.”

Jackson Bernier, a freshman, recorded a shutout in his first 12 minutes of varsity play when he entered the game as goalkeeper late in the second period.

“We have our eyes on executing a fast paced but disciplined game when we arrive in Presque Isle next weekend,” Magri said.

The Windjammers will square off with the Wildcats in the regular season opener Friday, Dec. 7 at 6:30 p.m.
