WATERVILLE — Students from Computer Careers and  Building Construction programs at Waldo County Technical Center (WCTC) recently had the opportunity to participate in the Thomas Cup - an overnight event at Thomas College in Waterville that combined technology, teamwork and a healthy dose of competition.

The event ran from 6 p.m. on December 6  to 10 a.m. the next day. There were four challenges: a league of legends gaming competition, a Nerf™ war with robots, a cyber security version of capture the flag, and a crime scene investigation competition. Waldo County Technical Center students came in first place in the robotic Nerf™ wars.

One of the WCTC competitors, 16 year old Dyllan Marsh of Searsmont, stated that he enjoyed interacting with students from another tech center program and playing games with them.  He also said that eating pizza and staying up all night to build structures was also a fun component of the competition.

This is an annual event at Thomas College that hosts up to 30 teams at no cost to the competing schools. Waldo County Technical Center attends the event each year under the guidance of Computer Careers instructor Jeremiah Johnson.

Marsh said he is already looking forward to next year’s competition.
