ROCKLAND — Police responded to the report of a stabbing incident this morning, Dec. 6. A suspect, George Gilmore, 32, of Rockland and formerly of Bridgeport, Connecticut, is now in custody after Rockland police arrested him just after noon as he was exiting the men's bathroom at Dunkin Donut's on Main Street in Rockland.

"We received a call about the apartments on Knox Street of a stabbing incident involving two victims," said Rockland Police Chief Bruce Boucher, at approximately 12:45 p.m. while he was responding to the arrest at Dunkin Donuts.

"One of those [stabbed] individuals was taken to the hospital," he said. "During the course of the investigation, a person of interest was identified. He was located and he was taken into custody."

Law enforcement had received a description of the suspect, and recognized him as he was walking along Main Street toward the restaurant.

According to a report released by Rockland Deputy Police Chief Chris Young, police officials were called to an apartment complex on Knox Street at 12:08 p.m. following a report of a double stabbing. At the scene, they learned that a 33-year-old male and his 28-year-old girlfriend had been stabbed by another occupant of the residence. That occupant had fled the scene prior to police arrival.

Both victims were transported to Penobscot Bay Medical Center by Rockland Fire / EMS. The male victim was then transported via Life Flight to Maine Medical Center due to the extent of the injuries he sustained as a result of the stabbing. The female victim was treated and released from Penobscot Bay Medical Center.

Gilmore was transported to Penobscot Bay Medical Center where he was treated and released back into police custody for minor injuries sustained during the altercation, according to Chief Young's report.

A Dunkin Donuts employee, Carol Gifford, said he had been working the drive-through window when a man came into the restaurant and went straight to the bathroom.

"I watched him come in," he said. "He went straigth to the bathroom. The next thing I knew, the police were there with their guns out saying 'get down,  everybody out of the store.'"

As a result of the investigation Gilmore was arrested and charged with Elevated Aggravated Assault (Class A) and Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon (Class B), according to Chief Young's report. Gilmore is currently at the Knox County Jail.
