ROCKPORT — The parking lot at the Rockport Masonic Lodge was full on a late October afternoon, with most spots occupied by first responder vehicles, representing public works, law enforcement and fire departments in Knox County.

No, there was not a mandatory training or special drill taking place inside the lodge. Instead, the “Unofficial Ladies Auxiliary Club of Rockport” were hosting their third annual appreciation lunch for Knox County first responders.

The club members are Michelle Gagne Hannan, Maggie Timmermann, Michelle Chamberlain, Keirsten Delano and Marci Casas.

“The club’s goal is to host this event annually to thank the men and women of this community that put their lives on the line each and every day,” Hannan said, who is sister of Camden-Rockport Police Chief Randy Gagne. “We hope we never have to call on them but it’s comforting knowing that when we need them, they will be there.”

Approximately 35 first responders attended the event on Oct. 26 and several care packages of leftovers were packed up and delivered to the Knox Regional Communications Center and other police and fire departments for first responders, feeding those who were unable to attend or working a later shift.

The menu which was extensive with several entrees and desserts, mostly donated from local businesses, and filled several tables pushed together to form two long buffet stations.

But, it was not all about having a sumptuous buffet to recognize the first responders. Several businesses also donated raffle prizes including several gift certificates, a Dewalt chainsaw and a Smokey Joe premium charcoal grill.

“We live in a very generous community. Our small businesses are asked on many occasions to donate to a variety of worthy causes and they are always so willing to help. We couldn’t put on this type of event without their support,” Hannan said.

Donors who supported the third annual first responders lunch with donations of food and raffle prizes include:

Aldermere Farms, Camden Hannaford, Camden Subway, Coffee on the Porch, 40 Paper, Fresh off the Farm, Goose River Farm Stand, Graffam Brothers, Hammond Lumber, Home Depot, Laugh Loud Smile Big, Lowes, Maine Lobster Festival, Market Basket, Rankins, River Ducks, Rockport Masonic Lodge, Rosalie Joy Bakery, Shaws, Studio 134, The Rockport Diner, The Samoset Resort, The Whitman Family, and Western Auto.
