Union Elementary to hold contra dance for the community

Event has passed

UNION — Union Elementary School invites the community to attend a contra dance on Friday, May 17, from 6 - 7:30 p.m., in the school gymnasium. The contra dance is the culmination of a dance residency with Belfast Flying Shoes teaching artist Chrissy Fowler.

Over the last several months Fowler worked with all PreK-6 students, building dance repertoire and skills in the framework of the traditional art of contra dancing. This form of social dancing is community-based, helps connect people, cultivates pro-social behaviors, and supports social/emotional learning. The figures and dance steps are simple, which helps all skill levels and ages participate together.

“I have loved working with the students and staff at Union Elementary School,” said Fowler, in a news release. “Their willingness to learn these dances, and their commitment to supporting each other with kindest and respect, has made it a true community-building experience!”

Music at the community contra dance at Union Elementary School will be provided by Elsie Gawler and Ethan Tischler and the dances will be called by Chrissy Fowler.

Community members who attend do not need any previous experience, all are welcome to learn and dance.

“As contra dancing, a descendant of English and French country dancing, was very popular in the late 18th century, it is an especially fitting connection to the town of Union, which was founded in the late 18th century,” said Union Sestercentennial Committee, in the release.

Modern contra dancing is still led by a caller, who teaches the steps to the dancers before the music starts. There is no limit to the number of people who can participate in a dance, as everyone is in motion based on parallel lines. Several of the dances that the elementary students have learned are the same as what was danced in the dance halls in Union years ago.

The dance residency is another activity that is part of the ongoing acknowledgement and celebration of the town of Union’s Sestercentennial, 250 years, July 19, 20, and 21.
