reflecting on the evolving higher education landscape

ROCKLAND — President Jenifer Cushman, of the University of Maine at Augusta, visited the Rockland Center on Monday, March 4, to sit in on Professor Stephen Moro’s Public Speaking course. With an on-site class of 20 students, President Cushman came to see what makes UMA’s Rockland Center such a special place: “the outstanding faculty and the diverse students from all stages of life,” said URock, in a news release.

Reflecting on the opportunity to visit the Rockland Center, President Cushman said, “As a university with a statewide mission of access to workforce development, the University of Maine at Augusta meets students where they are and helps them get where they want to be. That’s why we offer multiple modes (including online) and local locations, which include two campuses and eight Centers across the state. Because so many of Maine’s residents do not have reliable access to broadband, our Centers are especially crucial to our mission, as they provide physical spaces for the least resourced students to access online and in-person educational opportunities.”

As UMA Rockland Center looks towards the future and reflects on the evolving higher education landscape, Cushman said, “UMA is well positioned to meet the needs of students in today’s rapidly changing higher education landscape of always-on, anywhere learning. We meet students where they are (in person and online) to get them where they want to be by reducing barriers to educational access, engaging them in hands-on experiential learning opportunities, and providing a mixture of credentials including certificates that count towards a degree.”

For over 50 years UMA Rockland Center has helped thousands of students in Knox, Lincoln & Waldo counties earn their degrees in pursuit of their personal and professional goals. UMA specializes in providing students a flexible and affordable education. UMA Rockland offers 40+ career-specific certificate programs, 15+ associate’s degrees, 30+ bachelor’s degrees, and 5+ graduate certificates/degrees. Advisors are here to support residents at all stages of life from Early College high school students through senior citizens.
