Southbound and down: Appledore heads to Key West

    CAMDEN – The schooner Appledore II left its summer home in Camden Harbor on October 25, to begin its annual 2,000 mile journey to Key West, FL. The crew of ten expected to make the trip in about two weeks, as they anticipated that weather concerns in the east may cause some delays.

    This will mark the vessel’s 29th trip south. It’s return to Camden in in May it will mark the 59th time the boat has made the circuit.

    The Appledore II was built in 1978 and was the last ship to come out of the Gamage Shipyard in Bristol, Maine.

    The delivery crew includes two captains and a cook as it sails 24/7 usually making one stop in Beaufort, North Carolina. for fuel and supplies.

    It has called Camden its home port since 1988 and began operating as a daysailer since 1989 out of what was then Sharp’s Wharf and is now Bayview Landing at 16 Bayview St.
