September movies at Thomaston Public Library
THOMASTON – The September theme for the Thomaston Public Library’s Friday Night Film Series is ‘Never Too Old.’
Harold and Maude
1971 PG 91 Minutes
A classic cult film that features one of the screen’s most unlikely pairs. Bud Cort is Harold, a young man bored with wealth but interested in death. Ruth Gordon is Maude, a wonderful old rascal who can see nothing but good intentions in the world. In her own delightful way she teaches Harold how to really appreciate life. An outrageously funny and affecting film. Also stars Vivian Pickles and Cyril Cusack.
Going in Style
1979 PG 97 Minutes
Senior citizens Willie (Lee Strasberg), Al (Art Carney) and Joe (George Burns) lead lives of uninterrupted boredom until they alight upon the idea of robbing a bank together. Though none of them has a criminal record, they nevertheless find the planning of the caper an energizing and satisfying experience all around. Even more surprisingly, they pull it off -- but no sooner do they make off with the loot than their age begins to catch up with them.
Last of the Blonde Bombshells
2000 PG-13 103 minutes
After Elizabeth's husband dies, she begins to play her tenor saxophone again, and remembers when she was fifteen and a member of the Blonde Bombshells, an all-girl (with one exception) swing band. Accompanied by the exception and urged on by her grand-daughter, Elizabeth (Judi Dench) hunts up all the old members of the band and urges them to perform, and in doing so, learns more than she knew about the band. Also stars Ian Holm, Olympia Dukakis, and Cleo Laine.
Love Among the Ruins

An aging actress and socialite, Jessica Medlicott (Katharine Hepburn) has ended her engagement with a younger man and is now being sued by her former fiancé. Esteemed barrister Sir Arthur Glanville-Jones (Laurence Olivier) is assigned to represent Jessica in the lawsuit, and he also happens to be an old suitor of hers from decades earlier. While Jessica claims not to remember him, and Arthur still smarts from her earlier rejection, the two form a close bond during the case.
