UNITY — Three months into the new calendar year and the RSU 3 school district has lost both its superintendent and assistant superintendent. 

Both positions oversee operations at Monroe Elementary School, Morse Memorial Elementary School, Mount View Elementary School, Mount View Middle School, Mount View High School, Troy Elementary School, Unity School and Walker Elementary. 

RSU 3 is in rural Waldo County and includes the towns of Brooks, Freedom, Jackson, Knox, Liberty, Monroe, Montville, Thorndike, Troy, Unity, and Waldo.

The district serves approximately 1,250 students with approximately 85 students from Mount View High School attending the Waldo County Technical Center. 

Superintendent Search

In January, RSU 3 Superintendent Dr. Paul Austin accepted the same role for Hingham Public Schools in Massachusetts, according to The Hingham Journal. 

Austin has been the education field for over 25 years serving as a school social worker, school psychological services provider, student services director and assistant superintendent. 

He began his superintendent role within RSU 3 in July 2015.

Prior to working for RSU 3, Austin was employed in leadership roles within the Brunswick School Department, School Union No. 74 and CSD No. 14 in Damariscotta, Maine School Administrative District 53 in Skowhegan and Maine School Administrative District 38 in Dixmont. 

Austin, according to the Journal, will be balancing his RSU 3 duties and learning the ins and outs of his new school district for the remainder of the academic year. 

A search for a new superintendent is underway with the application window closing March 29. The search is being handled by the Maine School Management Association. 

Assistant Superintendent Search

Earlier this month, RSU 3 Assistant Superintendent Jean Skorapa handed in her resignation to become a superintendent in another Maine school district. 

Skorapa has been in the education field for over three decades as a first grade teacher, principal and curriculum director. 

Prior to being hired by RSU 3 in August 2016, Skorapa spent over two decades within the Brunswick School Department. 

Skorapa is leaving to become the superintendent of RSU 67, which she noted is her hometown area. RSU 67 serves the Chester, Lincoln and Mattawamkeag communities. 

She will remain with RSU 3 until the end of May and will begin her new role in June. 

A search for a new assistant superintendent is expected to begin this spring.
