ROCKLAND — Sally Breit Landsburg died on March 11 at the Sussman House Hospice in Rockport, Maine after a brief but intense battle with cancer.

Sally was born on August 18, 1933 in Binghamton, New York to Nellie Schwab Goldberg. Her father, Dr. Hugo Breit died while in his early fifties, while her mother died at 78 after remarrying Leo Goldberg.

Sally attended Ithaca College where she received a Bachelor’s degree in Theater/Speech. After graduation, she moved to New York City and was employed by NBC. She married Alan Landsburg and they moved to Los Angeles, California.

After the birth of their children, Valerie and Michael Landsburg, Sally earned her Masters Degree in English from California State College at Los Angeles and then taught English at Rio Hondo Community College in Whittier, California. In 1974, after the dissolution of their marriage, Sally and Andrew fell in love and they started their 45-year journey of love, laughter and creativity.

Attending California Family Study Center, affiliated with Azusa Pacific University, Sally received another Masters Degree in 1977, in Psychology/Marriage, Child and Family Counseling. While a member of the English Department at Rio Hondo College, she joined the faculty at the Rio Hondo Police Academy. She utilized her teaching skills and subject competency in both writing and psychology to teach police officers concepts of community policing, i.e. communication skills with the citizens they serve, diffusing and handling domestic disputes and hostage negotiation techniques.

After attaining the rank of full professorship at the college, Sally co-founded, along with her husband Andrew Reichline, group private practice Main Street Counseling Associates in Santa Monica, California.

In 1983, Sally and her husband Andrew bought a house on Otis Point in Tenants Harbor, Maine.

They eventually moved to Rockland, Maine in 2011. Sally joined the academic faculty at Maine Photographic Workshops/Rockport College where she taught for five years subjects such as Storytelling Craft, Writing, Mythology and Basic Psychology.

Sally co-founded, with Kate Fletcher, Midcoast Family Theater offering opportunities for youngsters to write, direct, produce and act in plays of their own creation. The youthful stars of tomorrow presented their productions at retirement homes, schools and street festivals.

Sally sat on many boards of directors and/or committees for non-profit organizations in midcoast Maine, including Merryspring Park, Bay Chamber Concerts in Rockport, Maine, and Adas Yoshuron Synagogue and Lincoln Street Center for Arts and Education in Rockland (where she was a founding member).

A talented writer, Sally authored “The Age Taboo - Older Women, Younger Men Relationships” (Little, Brown), and “In Search of Ancient Mysteries” and “The Outer Space Connection” (Bantam Books.) She wrote for periodicals and had her own column in the Free Press entitled “Around and About Midcoast Maine.” She wrote publicity releases for Bay Chamber Concerts that featured in-depth interviews with visiting musicians slated to perform in Midcoast Maine.

Sally is survived by her husband, Andrew Reichline and her children, Valerie Landsburg and significant other James Gussen in Rockland, Maine, Michael Landsburg and wife Anne in North Hollywood, California and daughter Shana Landsburg as well as former son-in-law James McVay in Sherman Oaks, California.

She leaves behind grandchildren Taylor McVay and husband Jordan Tynes, Brooklyn McVay and significant other Kayla Shapero, Newman Wolf, Frankie Wolf, Addison Landsburg, Gabriel Barab, Joe Cortez-Adams and Mia Gussen; her brother Allan Breit and wife Mori Morrison as well as her step-sister Rita Brown and step-brother Michael Goldberg and nephew and niece in Israel, Aryeh Yuval and Debbie Mishol.

Also she is survived by her cousin Carl Schwab and wife Nancy in Port Clyde, Maine and the many Schwab cousins in Maine as well as cousins Martin and wife Antoinette Fischer in Massachusetts and cousins John, Anne and Evie Klingner in New York.

She will be missed by brother-in-law Neil Reichline his sons Eli and Alex and his significant other Marilyn Fils in Tarzana, California as well as sister-in-law Rhonda Reichline Dubin and her children Marika, Anya and Josh and her husband Lorne Dubin in Mill Valley, California.

Sally had a myriad of friends throughout her life journey.

Nancy Duncan, Larry Pritchard, Scott Erskine and Riley Harvey, and to Liz Snyder and all the Adas Yoshuron Synagogue members who reached out as a support system.

She will be missed by friends Annabelle Marquez, Elizabeth Martin, Esther, Rick and Sydney Barnhart, as well as members of her monthly Documentary Group, Dawn Harlor, Pam Maus, Christine Wohler, John Newburn, Harrah Lord, David Adnapoz, Mimi Edmunds and Rosie Curtis.

Sally will be missed by dear, lifetime friends Harriet Stuart, Henri and Phyllis Bagdadi, Kay Waldo, Montserrat Fontez, Al and Vicki Borrego, Catlin Adams and Katherine Cortez and the many friends, students, clients and colleagues whose paths she crossed and whose lives she touched.

A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 13, 2019, at the Berliawsky-Small Cemetery, upper Park Street, Rockland.  Details of a memorial service to be held June 1, 2019 will be announced.

Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter and Hutchins Funeral Home, Rockland.
