ROCKPORT — A three-car crash on Route 1 sent four people to Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport via four ambulances mid-afternoon, May 23.

The crash occurred just after 2:30 p.m. when the driver of a north-bound SUV attempted to turn left into the State of Maine Cheese store was rear-ended by a Jeep that was following behind him.

The impact from that crash sent the first SUV into the opposite lane of oncoming south-bound traffic, and into the path of a smaller four-door sedan.

Two ambulances from North East Mobile Health Services, in Rockport, responded, and two ambulances from Rockland EMS also responded. Crews tended to four injured people, and transported them via the four ambulances to the hospital, “with what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries,” said Camden-Rockport Police Chief Randy Gagne.

Meanwhile, 17 Rockport firefighters tended to the crash scene, and diverted traffic to alternate routes away from Route 1, according to Rockport Fire Chief Jason Peasley.

The highway reopened approximately one hour after the crash. Rockport Police and Camden Police also responded to the crash.

The crash remains under investigation by Officer Chris Taylor, of Rockport PD.
