ROCKPORT — Firefighters in Rockport, as well from Hope and Camden, responded to a house fire on West Street Extension and successfully knocked it down.

Knox Regional Communications Center in Rockland received a call from a homeowner just after 4:30 p.m., who reported that flames had spread to the roof and back of the home.

On Jan. 5, the Maine Fire Marshal’s Office said the fire was accidental, and caused by an improperly installed wood stove, the heat from which set a wall on fire.

A public works crew had been called out to keep the roads clear while North East Mobile Health Services has also responded with an ambulance.

Firefighters have cleared the scene, and the family was able to find warm shelter with friends.

Just prior to the house fire, Rockport firefighters had responded to the report of trees down on wires, burning. The downed wires were at the corner of Camrock and Mistic Ave., with power shut off to houses in that neighborhood.

As of 6 p.m., Jan. 4, Central Maine Power reported that the 16 customers in Camden and 16 in Rockport were without power.

In Waldo County, things were worse, with Winterport reporting 136 customers without power, and Lincolnville reporting 34 customers in the dark.
