NORTHPORT - Residents left little question of their interest in leaving Regional School Unit 20, passing a withdrawal referendum by a vote of 762 to 86, with 18 blank ballots.

Northport is one of six town that voted on withdrawal from RSU 20 Tuesday. Unlike the other towns, which hope to re-unite under a new flag, Northport will operate it’s own K-8 school out of the current Drinkwater Elementary School building. As part of the withdrawal plan, the town will contract with neighboring School Union 69 (Appleton, Hope and Lincolnville) to share administrative services.

Students in secondary school would have the option to tuition into a high school in a neighboring district.
