CAMDEN — Missie Ryder Stone died July 20.  She had been coming to Maine for more than 40 years and became a resident in 2012 when she moved to Quarry Hill in Camden.  

She was born on March 15, 1916 to James P. and Nelle A. Ryder in Washington D.C.  Her father was a civil engineer and the family moved around the West and Midwest throughout her childhood. 

Her mother was a teacher who ran a school for the Ojibwa children when living in Hayward, Wisconsin, and which Missie and her brother also attended.  She spent summers at her maternal grandmother’s house in Deer Lodge, Montana, where her love of the outdoors and sports were honed.  She was an accomplished and avid golfer and played into her late 80s.

She married the late Robert A. Stone in 1940; the marriage ended in divorce.  Missie became the Patent Liaison Coordinator for 3M in St. Paul before moving to Coronado where she lived for 20 years.  

She was, at 102, the oldest living Homecoming Queen from the University of Minnesota, which she attended after graduating from University High School in Minneapolis.  

She is survived by two children, Missie Stone Walker, of Camden, and Robert Ryder Stone, of Vero Beach, Florida, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
