Midcoast Actors present The Crucible

BELFAST — Midcoast Actors’ Studio will present The Crucible, an timeless allegory of fear, greed and power written by one of the America’s greatest playwrights, October 26 - November 4, at the Crosby Center in Belfast.

When teenage girls are discovered trying to conjure spirits, the 17th century town of Salem explodes with accusations of witchcraft. The vicious trials that follow expose a community paralyzed by terror, religious extremism and greed, and a marriage forever changed.

Miller wrote The Crucible as a dramatization of the Salem Witch Trials, with the witch trials standing in for the anti-Communist “witch-hunts” of the 1950s McCarthy era. As with the alleged witches of Salem, suspected Communists were encouraged to confess and identify other Communist sympathizers in order to escape punishment. Many of those accused of Communism suffered loss of employment and/or destruction of their careers; some even suffered imprisonment.

The Crucible won the Tony Award in 1953 for Best Play. The play was later adapted by Miller in 1996 and nominated for two Oscars, including Best Screenplay. It featured Wynona Ryder and Daniel Day-Lewis and was Miller’s only Academy Award nomination.

Directing The Crucible is MAS Founding Artistic Director Jason Bannister.

“What I love about the story are the tragic choices the characters make,” Bannister said in a news release. “Miller takes us on a journey that snowballs out of control.”

Bannister chose The Crucible as part of the 2018 season and its theme of power, according to the release. Along with this past summer’s Cabaret, this production looks at how to obtain and keep power, through any means necessary.

Nathan Roach plays John Proctor. Elizabeth Proctor is played by Leah Bannister.

Other cast members include Bryan Hayes as Rev. Hale, Jason Bannister as Deputy Governor Danforth, Cory Burns as Rev. Parris, Emma Bishop as Abigail Williams, Erin Hayes as Mary Warren, Scott Taylor as Giles Corey, Jay Holland as Judge Hathorne, Alison Cox as Rebecca Nurse, Ralph Chapman as Francis Nurse, Jim Tatgenhorst as Ezekiel Cheever, Ivy Lobato as Tituba, Scott Cournoyer as George Herrick, Eric Sanders as Thomas Putnam, Danielle Bannister as Ann Putnam, Jordyn Brewer as Mercy Lewis, Marina Bannister as Betty Parris, Sarah Cournoyer as Susanna Walcott Lisa Hudson as Sarah Good, and Annabelle Lisa as Ruth Putnam.
