Midcoast 15s split Babe Ruth playoff doubleheader

THOMASTON — The Midcoast 15 year old all-star Babe Ruth baseball team took the field for a district playoff doubleheader Friday, July 7 at Thomaston’s Oceanside baseball field. 

In the day’s opening contest, the Midcoast 15s defeated Augusta 4-1 before falling to Apple Valley 10-7 in the final game of the day. In between the Midcoast doubleheader, Coastal West eliminated Coastal North by grabbing a 12-2 victory. 

The playoff tournament will continue Saturday, July 8 when Coastal West challenges Augusta at 2:15 p.m. with the winner playing the Midcoast squad at 4:45 p.m. The loser of both contests will be eliminated. Apple Valley will battle the winner of the 4:45 p.m. game for the district crown Sunday, July 9. 

Midcoast 4, Augusta 1

Midcoast plated three runs in the first inning and one in the third while Augusta’s lone run came in the fourth inning. 

Repeat hitters for Midcoast included Ben Ripley (single, double, two runs, two RBI, four stolen bases) and Carson Murphy (triple, RBI). 

Nick Holland was the lone repeat hitter for Augusta with a single, double, run and stolen base. 

On the mound for Midcoast were Ripley (4.1 innings, one run, one hit, four walks, five strikeouts), Wyatt Fillmore (1.2 innings, one hit, one walk), Luke Hamlin (0.2 innings, one hit, one walk) and Dakota Payson (0.1 innings, one walk). 

Jacob Brown worked the mound for Augusta going six innings four runs, four hits, six strikeouts and five walks. 

Apple Valley 10, Midcoast 7

Apple Valley plated two runs each in the first, second and third innings, three in the fifth and one in the sixth while Midcoast scored three runs in the second and two runs each in the third and seventh innings. 

Maguirre Anuezewski was the lone repeat hitter for Apple Valley with two singles, a triple, three runs and a RBI. 

Repeat performers for Midcoast included Tiger Cumming (single, run, RBI) and Ripley (run, RBI, stolen base). 

 

On the mound for Apple Valley were Jay Lauter (two innings, three runs, two hits, three walks, two strikeouts) and Brian Hewitt (five innings, four runs, five hits, one walk, three strikeouts). 

On the mound for Midcoast were Darius Pierpoint (two runs, three walks and one hit-by-pitch), Duncan Widdecombe (4.1 innings, seven runs, eight hits, one walk, two strikeouts) and Luke Hamlin (1.2 innings, one hit, one strikeout).
