WALDOBORO — The Medomak Valley varsity football team is off to a 2-2 start to the season after securing its latest victory in a Friday, Sept. 21 showdown with Old Town.

The Panthers entered the Old Town contest riding a one game win streak thanks to a home 7-6 victory over Oceanside. Medomak Valley opened the season with two consectuive losses, a 13-6 season opening loss to Mount Ararat and a 63-0 road loss against Maine Central Institute.

In the Sept. 21 affair, the Panthers were able to collect a 20-7 victory and now turn their attention to a road contest against Waterville on Friday, Sept. 28. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.

Against Old Town, Colvin Standring opened the scoring for Medomak Valley on a 10 yard rushing touchdown. The Panthers took a 6-0 lead after a failed extra point attempt.

Old Town answered back prior to the half on a 40 yard touchdown reception to take a 7-6 advantage into the halftime break.

In the third quarter, the hosts extended their advantage thanks to an Eli Miller two yard rushing touchdown, Miller two point rushing conversion and a Standring 10 yard rushing touchdown. The extra point attempt after the final touchdown was unsuccessful.

Medomak Valley head coach Ryan Snell noted Gabe Shellman contributed a key 19 yard reception on fourth down to set up the team’s second touchdown of the evening.

Leading the way for the Panthers on offense was Standring (18 carries for 90 yards, two touchdowns), Miller (16 carries for 49 yards, one touchdown), Jacob Light (10 carries for 21 yards) and Drew Severson (four carries for 19 yards).

On defense, Erik Benner captained the defensive attack with eight solo tackles and two assisted tackles. Other key contributors included Hinkley (forced fumble), Severson (forced fumble, recovered fumble), Pollard (two interceptions), Standring (five tackles, interception) and Nick Viles (four tackles).

The night was incredibly special as the under the lights contest was sponsored by the family of Brendan Lash, a former Panther football team player and captain, who graduated with the Class of 2016 and passed away this spring.

“Many Panther football alumni were in attendance to show support for their former teammate and his family,” said Snell.
