TENANTS HARBOR — Mary L. Webb, 90, died peacefully, Friday, March 15, 2019, at Brentwood Rehabilitation and Living Center in Yarmouth.

Born in Portland, December 19, 1928, she was the daughter of Vernard and Etta Morris Watts. Educated locally, she was a graduate of St. George High School.

On July 30, 1960, she married Richard I. Webb, Jr. Together they made their home in New York before building their home at Wiley’s Corner. While living in New York, Mary worked at the Syracuse Ornamental Company.

Once in Maine she served as one of the first home health caregivers in our area. She began by looking in on family and friends, assisting with the cooking and cleaning while they were ill. This progressed into a full time career, one of which she was very proud.

A hard worker her entire life, she worked many years with her family digging graves in the local cemeteries, hauling gravel for her uncle, Alison Morris’ construction company, and even picking up cans on the side of the road. She had a heart for family and never missed a year of placing flowers and cleaning stones for the graves of each and every family member and friend in her area.

Mary was an avid cook and cooked regularly for local organizations and benefits in town, especially the St. George Fire Department/Fire Flies as well as the St. George Grange. Along with her good friend, Mary Wiley, she served as a dinner party hostess for local residences.

She had a green thumb, and kept many flower, vegetable and fruit gardens. At one point she had 500 strawberry plants, growing giant, juicy strawberries to share.

She loved to travel and remembered with great fondness a trip to England to her family’s place of origin. She was a strong independent woman who wasn’t afraid to speak her mind and didn’t mince words. She will be missed by all who loved her.

Predeceased by her husband in 2014; Mary is survived by several cousins; by her good friend Brian Field of South Portland and Tenants Harbor; and good friends, Jim Skoglund of St. George, and Charlene Black of Tenants Harbor.

A graveside service will be announced in the Spring.

Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter and Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland.
