BELFAST — A Carmel man was arraigned in Waldo County Superior Court June 21, after allegedly sexually assaulting a woman in Belfast Aug. 21, according to court documents.

Phillip E. Lear, 32, was charged with gross sexual assault and assault as a result of the alleged attack, during which Lear is accused of “intentionally, knowingly or recklessly [causing] bodily injury or offensive physical contact” with the victim, according to a Grand Jury Indictment handed down in May.

The incident was investigated by Belfast Police Deputy Chief Gerald Lincoln.

Lear was released on his own recognizance following his arrest, with his conditions of release stipulating he has no contact with his alleged victim, including avoiding any residence, place of employment, or place of education where the victim is affiliated.

He is next expected to appear in Unified Criminal Court Aug. 13, at 2 p.m.
