Lincolnville artist Janet Redfield recently installed 100 fused stained glass fish in hallways and spaces of the new Amanda C. Rowe School Elementary School, on Orono Road, in Portland. Redfield, whose work has helped adorn 31 other Maine schools, as well as the Rockland Ferry Terminal, over the past 30 years, is often commissioned by the Maine Percent for Art, a program of the state-run Maine Arts Commission.

 

In the Amanda C. Rowe school, Redfield spent three days hanging the glass fish that she has been creating since early April.

 

“ This school has a fish theme with a salt water tank they are bringing from the previous school, which was demolished on the same site as the new school,” said Redfield. “They wanted art that encouraged people to enter the doors and walk on in, so the schools of fish are all ‘swimming’ down the entry hall towards the gym, cafeteria, library, and stage.”

 

Redfield continues to work in her Lincolnville workshop, where she has been creating stained glass art for decades. She is now experimenting with mobiles,  and “working on picking and freezing vegetables from my garden,” she reported.
