ROCKPORT — A Lewiston man who was wanted by police since April on multiple sexual assault charges, was the deceased person found by a hunter in Rockport Nov. 1.

Camden Police Lt. Michael Geary confirmed Nov. 9 that the badly decomposed body discovered approximately 500 yards in the woods off Mt. Pleasant Road in Rockport, near the Hope line, was 44-year-old Kevin Mitchell. (Hunter discovers body in Rockport woods, police investigate)

Geary said that the State Medical Examiner is continuing its analysis to determine the actual cause of death.

The Lewiston Police Department had warrants for Mitchell’s arrest for four counts of Class A gross sexual assault, two counts of Class A unlawful sexual contact, and one count of Class B unlawful sexual contact.

Mitchell’s wife had reported him missing as of April 29.

At approximately 9:15 p.m. on Tuesday, May 2, Knox County Sheriff deputies were called regarding a suspicious vehicle on the side of the road on Mt. Pleasant Road in Union. Information gathered there led them to the vehicle belonging to Mitchell.

Mitchell apparently had ties in this area from when he was younger. A search around where the vehicle was located by the Knox County Sheriff’s Office and Maine Warden Service K-9 Units did not locate the man.
