Letter to the editor: Meet Ollie and others at Union Fair Youth Market Auction

Thu, 08/02/2018 - 3:15pm

In light of the current movement toward eating local, knowing one’s farmer, and environmentally and ethically responsible food choices, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself and my 4H project.

My name is Greta Bishop. I am a junior at Camden Hills Regional High School as well as a member of the Aldermere Farm 4H club.

This year, I have raised a Belted Galloway steer named Ollie. Ollie was born in March of 2017 and I bought him last November. Since November, I have been spending time raising Ollie with care and precision and as of August, he will be ready to be sold in the Union Fair Youth Market Auction.

The auction is where we 4H’ers from all around the state sell our animals at live weight to bidding customers. Steers, lambs, meat birds, and laying hens will be available in the auction. The auction has been growing in popularity every year. Local businesses such as Nina June, the Drouthy Bear, Boyton McKay and even the local Hannafords have attended and bought animals in the past. In addition to these businesses, many individuals who see the benefit of supporting youth and consuming locally raised meat products have also purchased animals themselves or joined neighbors and friends in splitting an animal.

The auction is on August 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the Union Fair. The buyer’s reception is at 6 p.m. Please contact me with any questions or if you would like a pass into the fair for the auction. Contact me at gretadbishop@gmail.com.

Please consider attending the Union Fair Youth Market Auction and supporting local agriculture and the 4H youth. Thank you.
