ROCKLAND — Merryspring Nature Center will host a build-your-own nesting box workshop, Saturday, March 2, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Guests must sign up for this program by Friday, Feb. 22.

Eric Evans leads this program on how to correctly build, site, and mount nesting boxes for a variety of native Maine bird species.

Many of the birds that breed in Maine need cavities for their nests, and providing a nest box of just the right size is a big help for birds if they can't find the right natural cavity in a tree, according to Merrysprings.

In this workshop, each participant will assemble a nest box from pre-cut lumber.

Registration for the workshop must include selecting a bird species, with the following habitat requirements: 1.) bluebirds and tree swallows — at edge of at least half acre of short grass; 2.) wrens — dense bushes or tree foliage; 3.) saw-whet or barred owl — woods; 4.) red-bellied woodpecker, flicker, or kestrel — woods edge facing opening.

The Merryspring website has links to more information about next boxes.

Eric Evans is a longtime Merryspring volunteer. He is closely associated with the Maine Chapter of the American Chestnut Foundation, where he serves as breeding coordinator - south.

The cost of this workshop is $25, with a discounted rate of $20 for Merryspring members. Participants must pre-register, pay, and select a type of nesting box by Friday, February 22.

Guests who can should bring a manual or electric Phillips-head screwdriver. A limited number will be available at the workshop.

This event is part of the Weekend Workshop series at Merryspring.
