K.R. Aroneau: On Cumberland Island

Fri, 10/17/2014 - 8:15am

    On Cumberland Island

Soft hanging moss and lazy dunes intoxicate my inner story,

the story I tell myself when it's warm and I bob in the briny waves,

laughing with my friends by the sea, by the sea on Cumberland Island.

The fanning palmettos give the illusion of breeze,

and that is enough for us.

We race to the top then slide happily down a dune in slow motion

until we kiss the beach, its outstretched arm to hold us.

Wild horses join in the mantra that rolls in on every wave,

    they too bow in accord.

Ever delighted, Pelicans and Pipers ride wind charged with nature's current.

We too receive the sun's insistence of more.

    Inspecting each other for burning

we lather up with sunscreen, and continue to laugh.

    Transformations
    We tell stories.
We tell stories to make sense of our lives.
We tell stories to communicate our experience of being alive.
We tell stories in our own distinct voice. Our own unique rhythm and tonality.

Transformations is a weekly story-telling column. The stories are written by community members who are my students. Our stories are about family, love, loss and good times. We hope to make you laugh and cry. Maybe we will convince you to tell your stories.

"Everyone, when they get quiet, when they become desperately honest with themselves, is capable of uttering profound truths. We all derive from the same source. There is no mystery about the origin of things. We are all part of creation, all kings, all poets, all musicians; we have only to open up, only to discover what is already there." — Henry Miller
