Knox County Criminal Docket closed cases

    ROCKLAND — The following cases were closed in Knox County Unified Court from Jan. 26-Feb.2.

    Raymond C. Athearn, 88, of Rockland, operating a vehicle without a license-conditions/restrictions, $100 fine.

    Brandy M. Hardy, 36, of Waterville, trafficking in prison contraband, one year in jail with all but 30 days suspended, probation one year.

    Emily Lawry, 39, of Rockland, two counts, violating a protection from abuse order, 48 hours in jail.

    John G. Ponte, 26, of Rockport, domestic violence assault, dismissed.

    Cheryl L. Starke, 54, of Winterport, operating under the influence (alcohol), $500 fine, 72 hours in jail, license suspended 150 days.

    Tyler A. Vangel, 24, of Lincolnville, probation violation for original conviction of domestic violence assault for an incident in July 2016, six months in jail, probation partially revoked, probation continued. Vangel was arrested by Knox County Sheriff Deputies July 12, 2016, and charged with domestic abuse, assault, criminal threatening and reckless conduct, all Class D offenses. He was also charged with violation of conditions of release, Class E, and operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license. He was also currently on probation, since July 6, 2016, for a drug conviction in Cumberland County.

    Police were called July 12, 2016 around 4 p.m. to the Maritime Farms gas station on Route 17 in Union for a possible domestic violence incident. The victim, who appeared upset, was crying and had bruises on her face, a nose that was swollen and black and blue, and a cut on her right hand. She asked a witness at the gas station to call police for help, according to the police affidavit filed in Knox County Unified Court. 

    According to a witness report, Vangel got back in the car with the victim and drove off before police arrived. Another witness followed the vehicle and was able to direct police to its location near the Union Common, where Sgt. John Palmer made contact with Vangel who arrested him at the scene. Vangel told police that the victim had been attacked by another girl. Police noted that Vangel’s shirt was covered in the victim’s blood, but he said it was his own blood, according to the court document. 

    When police interviewed the victim, she said that they were arguing in the car and she told him she wanted to end their relationship. Vangel punched her several times in the face with a closed fist. The victim said “she was in fear for her life.” 

    Kristina D. Winchenbach, 39, of Rockland, probation violation for original conviction unlawful trafficking in scheduled drugs, two counts, six years in jail with all but four months, 15 days suspended, probation two years. 

    Dmytro Zaiets, 30, of South Thomaston, reckless conduct, 180 days in jail, all suspended, probation one year; disorderly conduct, offensive words, gestures, six months in jail; aggravated assault, dismissed; reckless conduct, dismissed; criminal threatening, dismissed. According to police, on Feb. 8, in South Thomaston, Zaiets fired a high powered pellet to scare away three male children, ages 13 and 14 years, causing injury to one of the boys who required medical treatment.
