Jones records 500th career strikeout as Oceanside softball wins season opener

READFIELD — The Oceanside varsity softball team hit the road to Readfield on Wendesday, April 17 to challenge Marancook at Kents Hill. 

In the season opening contest, Oceanside collected a 2-0 victory. 

In its next contest, Oceanside will host Erskine Academy on Friday, April 19 at 1 p.m.

On Wednesday, the visiting Mariners plated a run in each the first and third innings. 

Oceanside had three hits, while Maranacook posted one. 

Oceanside committed one error, while Marancook did not commit an error. 

In the pitching circle for Oceanside was Chloe Jones who recorded 14 strikeouts, with the final strikeout being her 500th career strikeout. 

In the pitching circle for Marancook was Natilie Costa, who fanned six and walked five. 

Leading the offense for Maranacook was Abby Jacques (bunt single). 

Leading the offense for Oceanside were Abby Veilleux (two singles, three stolen bases, two runs) and Grace Pratt (single, three stolen bases). 

Through three seasons of high school softball, Veilleux has yet to be thrown out while stealing a base, according to Oceanside head coach Rusty Worcester.

Pratt, meanwhile, collected her first career hit in the season opener.
