Islandport Press has signed a contract with Camden author and adventurer James S. Rockefeller Jr. to publish his memoir Wayfarer in the fall of 2018.

Wayfarer is a glimpse back at a remarkable life that began as echoes of the Edwardian Era were fading, and spans the most tumultuous times of the 20th Century.

From his childhood as the son of 1924 Olympic rowing champion James S. Rockefeller, Sr. and Nancy Campbell Sherlock Carnegie, to expeditions as a young man on his Indian motorcycle and his sailboat, Mandalay, to the fateful evening on Cumberland Island, Georgia, when his heart was stolen by author Margaret Wise Brown, Wayfarer recounts Rockefeller’s loves and losses, and the fearless drive that carried him across seas to explore other lands.

It is a glimpse of a time quickly disappearing into history, when the world seemed vast with unending adventures. The book is scheduled for an October 30, 2018, release.

“I was deeply moved to read Rockefeller’s memoir,” said Genevieve Morgan, lead editor for the book, in a news release. “Not only has he lived a wildly exciting and admirable life, which makes for compelling reading on its own, but he is a masterful storyteller and a true observer and appreciator of people and language. His memoir is a glimpse into another time when the world felt bigger and real adventures came calling. He’s a great man, and a great writer.”

Rockefeller, author of Man on His Island, is a cofounder of the Owls Head Transportation Museum in Owls Head, and served as its chairman until 2017.

Rockefeller built boats for 20 years at the Bald Mountain Boat Works, where he also restored a 1912 Etrich Taube replica airplane.

He stopped flying at the age of ninety, after clocking more than 2,000 hours in the air. Rockefeller has two children, Liv and Ola, with his former wife, the late Liv Heyerdahl. He married Marilyn Moss in 1983.
